Yo dawg, Battlebuzz

We doing this ?

I'm up for playing and/or running it. Tons of stuff to figure out;

What dates *do not* work for you?

What sets can we use? Maybe we can play a not shitty version of Modern World. I have no idea what the main tournament can be. Drew Scheeler has offered his set for play (presumably as a side tournament?)

Where can we play this? I... don't know!

Location and date are the first two hurdles we need to overcome - as I said on facebook, I'd prefer Saturday, August 2 or Sunday, August 3 based on my baseball and vacation schedules, but I'd like to see what others think.

Next question is, what set for the main tournament and are we playing Drew's trash set as the side tournament?

If Ohio State isn't available, we will be hosting battlebuzz 2014 at Tom Moore's house. Just park on the lawn.

I really had a good time doing this last year, so I would definitely like to come. I would be ok with almost any weekend before August 23, unless random something happens.
If Jarret, Jasper, or any other OSU people run this in Columbus, I would easily be able to show up, but if its in Cleveland or somewhere else it might be a bit more of a struggle getting there for me.
Last year, a bunch of Cincinnati people showed up, so it would be cool to see some more Cincy/Dayton/Cleveland people too. As for the set, I would place my vote for Penn-Bowl, DRAGOON, or some other regular-difficulty college set, which none of us have played. Modern-World would be a good side event, although its faced some backlash following the original mirror, but I would be fine playing it since I didn't play it at NSC.

I agree with Zel, any regular-difficulty set is the best bet IMHO, again, mainly because I blow as a player anymore.

Yeah Zel, I think a college tournament like you suggest will be trill.

If it can't be held in Columbus I imagine I can try and get rooms at OU-Lancaster or figure something out. Hell we could play it in a Catholic church!

And yeah, edited version of MWT would be cool.

I would think that a non-zero contingent of Wright State students would be interested in playing depending on the date.

I'll be teaching at ACE Pennsylvania, which ends on August 2...this may not affect anyone else, but I thought I would throw it out there.

Sunday, August 3rd would be fine as would almost any Saturday or Sunday in August for me. We should probably check for conflicts though.

ALL:

Please use the Google Docs spreadsheet at the link below so that we can see everyone's availability and determine the date which will maximize attendance. The first date is June 21 (I assumed only Saturdays, so that the event could hopefully go fairly late without most people worried about early commitments the following morning)., because I figured it would take at least a week or two to publicize the tournament, find a question source, find a host site, etc. As noted in the spreadsheet, please type in a "1" under dates in which you would attend, a "0.5" under dates in which it is possible you may attend, and a "0" under dates in which you can't make it (this provides a quick and easy way to calculate/determine the most popular dates). Also important: there is a separate sheet for BOTH Columbus and Cleveland area Battlebuzzes, so please be sure to fill in both spreadsheets so we can determine which site will draw the most attendance on a given weekend. Finally, please keep the spreadsheet current if your plans for any particular weekend change after you've filled in the spreadsheet.

Here's to hoping we can get another Battlebuzz organized!

P.S. Link to Google Docs spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

did you put "can edit" or open or something - it won't let me type into the spreadsheet.

I believe I made the necessary fixes so that anyone can now view AND edit the spreadsheet. Thanks for the heads-up Bob, and sorry for the confusion everybody.

Later today I will shoot a message to everyone of my quizbowl Facebook friends notifying them of this spreadsheet so that we can hopefully spread the word very quickly.

I hope to make it this year and if I can be there, I'll be able to bring two buzzer systems.

Mostly I want to kick Kilner's ass at trash again.

Yeah yeah, it was all skewed towards your strength areas last year... if the set has a 5/5 pro wrestling and 5/5 country music distribution, I'm all over you.

ALTHOUGH - if we play Drew's trash set, I could see some insanely weird answer lines coming up haha... he's already volunteered it if we want to use it (I'm for it)

Did Delta Burke get played in Ohio this year? If not, that would probably be a good main set to go with, since it's of roughly the same difficulty level as the past few Battlebuzzes.

I'm fairly certain it did not, but someone can correct me on this if I'm wrong. I've played older Delta Burke sets and they're always good difficulty and a lot of fun.

I don't think Delta Burke has been mirrored in Ohio for quite a while, if it ever has. I also don't recall using this year's set for practice, so it seems like the best thing to go with since it's not posted online.

Where are all the Ohio State people? I'm still thinking August 2 would be the best date for this based upon the spreadsheet so far.

I'm out of the country for the entire time period listed in the spreadsheet, so I didn't bother signing up just to put a bunch of zeroes in. I will spread the word to the OSU folk, though.

Yeah please do Jasper.

Joe said he would definitely be interested, and I'm assuming he would be the one to book rooms and whatnot for us if we host there... so please let him know too.

The spreadsheet is accurate for my dates, except for August 2 which I put .5 for. That is only if VCU gets mirrored somewhere close enough to drive to, if not, August 2 would be perfectly fine.

If we are still using the Delta Burke set, I have access to the questions that were added for the British version of the tournament. Would people like to play those questions as well?

Because reserving rooms in the summer is frustrating, we have had some difficulties with the room reservation but are hoping to hear that we can use Enarson Classrooms Building (the old Central Classrooms) on Saturday.

We have reserved rooms on the second floor of Enarson Classrooms from 8am-6pm on Saturday.

Who all is planning on coming? Who is bringing laptops... who is bringing buzzers? Who is John Galt?

I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes, but if someone wants to text me at 614.352.6448 and let me know whassup, that'd be cool. I don't think anyone wants to make the drive and pay for the parking if there isn't anything going on.

So far I heard Joe and Lauren are coming. Are various other OSU people coming?

I'm 50/50, if the stuff I need written is done by Saturday morning then I'll show up even if there isn't any official since I'll be in the area to visit some friends who live on north High. Brandon may be in tow, he's notoriously bad about replying in a timely manner.

I was going to be definitely coming, but if it sounds like not too many other people show up, I won't because there are work-related things I could (and probably should) be doing with a big deadline coming up that I hadn't realized weren't already done and needed to be. No one else from Wright State said they needed me to drive them, so I'm assuming their not coming. I still haven't been emailed the additional British questions, so I guess the idea for reading those as a side event isn't going to happen whether or not I show up.

EDIT:How much is this going to cost?
